How Do You Quantify Lead?

by | Oct 22, 2025 | Advice, Lead Testing | 0 comments

As if things weren’t complicated enough. There are several ways to measure the amount of lead, and it has been driving me crazy for a while.  Not being a scientist myself, I felt compelled to dive into the answer to explain the situation we are up against in layman’s terms. I researched and interviewed Dr. Lukas Helmbrecht, the confounding scientist of Lumetallix, and Uwe Reischl, PhD, MD, the Professor of Public Health and population health.  The conundrum is that  PPM and MCG /CM2 have nothing in common, yet they all explain how much lead is present. Trying to correlate them is pointless.

PPM

PPM, or parts per million, is a unit used to express the concentration of a substance in a mixture. It indicates the number of parts of that substance for every million parts of the total mix.

% Of Volume By Weight

w/v% or m/v% is calculated by dividing the mass of the solute in grams by the volume of solution in milliliters, then multiplying this by 100. A percentage concentration tells us how many parts of solute are present per 100 parts of solution.

Mcg/CM2

This formula is used when lead wipes are digested at a laboratory. The amount of lead dust is determined and then divided by the area where the wipe was used to determine the amount of lead dust in that area. The EPA is lowering these new lead dust rules to show its commitment to reducing lead dust. Tests are done on window troughs, window sills, and floors. Here are bullet points showing where we were and the latest standards as of OCTOBER 2024

  • Was 10 micrograms per square foot (µg/ft2) Recently lowered to 5 µg/ft2 for floors,
  • Was 100 µg/ft2 Recently lowered to 40 µg/ft2 for window sills,
  • Was 400 µg/ft2 Recently lowered to 100 µg/ft2 for window troughs.

EBLL

What is an elevated blood lead level? The EPA and CDC say a positive is 3.5mcg/ Deciliter of blood, This level was lowered in October 2021 from 5mcg/Deciliter, significantly increasing the number of leaded children. HUD still says 5MCG/DL is the threshold. This test involves a venous blood draw after the capillary finger poke shows positive at least twice.

In Summary

Each form of measurement is used to discover the quantity of lead in a unique way. Each way of measuring it is helpful however they can not be correlated. I used to think that 5,000 PPM, 5% by weight, or 1mg/Cm2 were all the same but Noooo. That would be too simple. Suffice it to say that Lead is bad. Any way you measure it, no amount of lead is better than any amount of lead. Strive for lead free. If you can’t confirm lead free, lead safe will do. Use Lumetallix instant lead test to see if any detectable is present. It is the most potent test on the market.
