I grew up in an older home and my father Ed Levitch MHRIP was an Architect and remodeling contractor in and around Berkeley California and the surrounding cities since 1958. Growing up I learned so many things from him, he taught me the value of family, respect and everything I know today about remodeling homes safely.
I remember a time at Levco Builders when I received a call from a man who shared a personal story about lead poisoning. He thanked me for advocating for the rule. I assured him of my commitment to safety. I was an early supporter of the EPA’s RRP rule, and I’m still a strong advocate today for ensuring people are safe in their homes.
What is a Healthy Home?
We all believe our homes are healthy places but all too often the opposite is true. As a remodeling contractor too, I deal with it every day. From the materials we use to how they are installed and the environment we create within the envelope of your home is unbelievably important. The CDC describes a healthy home as “One that is designed, built, and maintained to support our health” I couldn’t agree more. The other pivotal moment in my quest to promote healthy homes was a document written by the then Surgeon General, Steven Galson in 2009 who articulated the need for a healthy housing stock. This blog is dedicated to all things related to healthy homes with an emphasis on lead, lead detection as well as protection of humans and pets.

Lead Dust Detection and NVG’s

More Canaries In The Coal Mine
I just received another sad case study of leaded children that reportedly occurred several years ago over a several-year period. While enjoying living in a vintage national park housing complex, the employees were a young family of 2 with one on the way. The details...

Best Lead Test In The World?
I was having coffee with my good friend, Professor Uwe Reischl, PhD and MD. The conversation meandered to some of the great inventions and leaps in technology in disease prevention and how the Lumetallix instant lead test could become one of them. He shared my...

Lead Contamination In The News
The scenario plays out all over the country repeatedly. A child goes in for a checkup and gets a routine finger prick from their pediatrician for lead. The screening test comes back positive, so they repeat the test, and it is positive again. Then, a venous draw is...

Keeping Your Lead Bucket Empty
I recall a conversation regarding a cancer bucket. What is a cancer bucket, you ask? It was a metaphorical way of explaining that once you are prone to getting cancer (which was a genetic thing in their case), there were behaviors that could start filling the cancer...

New EPA Dust Clearance Rules Are A Beast
According to my sources, getting clearance is even more difficult due to the new lowered threshold for lead dust in federally funded projects or when Lead abatement is happening. It's Like Taking An Open Book Test Wouldn't it be great if you knew that clearance was a...
