Have you ever walked past a construction site where an old building was being demolished or renovated? You have likely brought some lead into your home. Have you ever gotten an old painted board or window upcycled into art? You have likely brought some lead into your home. We refer to it as Transference, and it is a genuine first-world problem. The sad part is that unless you test, you will never know.
There is no rule requiring commercial projects outside of a child-occupied facility to use lead-safe work practices. Yes, OSHA is concerned about the health and safety of workers, but it does not regulate the lead that escapes into the environment. The EPA has established rules for residential work called RRP, but commercial lead rules have not been established. As a refresher, Lead poisoning is catastrophic for pregnant moms because it gets into the unborn child’s body. Young children and pets are susceptible to irreversible damage, too. Oh, and not to be left out, long-term effects on adults are being discovered, as we speak.
Lead Dust Is Invisible, Or Is It?

HEPA Filtered Vacuum
Since lead dust is invisible, it quickly escapes the jobsite, worksite, or home and enters our bodies through ingestion and inhalation. I am a former Lead Risk Assessor. I own an XRF analyzer, and I am still amazed that I can now detect lead particles that are too small for XRF to detect using the Lumetallix instant lead test. Here are some generic helpful tips to eliminate the risk of poisoning your children, pets, and yourself
- The presumption is that if contractors use lead-safe work practices, also known as dustless demolition, then the odds of transferring lead dust into your home are diminished.
- Using a HEPA filtration system on a home vacuum is highly beneficial.
- When washing surfaces where lead collects, using household cleaners is helpful.
- Keeping a layer of latex paint to stabilize lead paint is very helpful.
- Not bringing leaded components into your home is very helpful. (Consumer Product Safety cannot protect you from everything!)
- Eliminating things that you find that are leaded from your home is helpful.
Pet Transference
Pets are a significant contributor to the transfer of lead into the household. Imagine your dog running through an area of lead dust, then bringing it back into your home.
Lead Worker Transference

This problem is significant. We were asked to participate in a study to determine the route of contamination for a group of workers whose children have been found to have elevated lead levels. I believe that with our Lumetallix instant lead test, we can trace the path of contamination and end it. Work site-auto-home. It is that simple.
DIY Renovation Transference
This problem is ageless and timeless, There are plenty of cases of home renovations being the root cause of childhood lead poisoning. In of my saddest memories when I was gaining my passion for Lead Poisoning Prevention was a renovator calling me to say “Remember the video you watched in that RRP class that poisoned his children, that was me” Get the word out! I have met and know of plenty of others who have suffered the pain of having inadvertently injured their children.
Living In An Old Home Transference
The act of living in an old home that is not cleaned or maintained properly can do it. Pregnant moms can transfer it. Not only that but so many products on the shelves are leaded that it is like navigating a mine field. Some jurisdictions in the country are mandating property owners to have their properties inspected on a 4-year cycle looking for lead hazards. This is a step in the right direction IMHO.
Shining the Lead Light On The Problem
Having the Lumetallix instant Lead Test change the focus from fear of the unknown to turning on a spotlight on the issue. Once seen, by spraying the reagent and illuminating the area with the UV Lead Light, the problem can be addressed and mitigated through proper cleaning techniques understanding the path of transmission then prevention. “While it Shines Green It Still Needs Cleaning”.
