I have always enjoyed understanding building science and have dabbled in the realm of an amateur of sorts trying to discover what is causing a home to make a resident feel ill when they are inside of it.

Being a former Paramedic, I blend my knowledge into a pretty good problem solver. Yes, your home could make you sick, and even kill you if have faulty systems. The risk goes up the tighter the home is.

Have You Ever Considered That Your House Could Be Making You Ill?

Do you have any of these symptoms only when you are at home? Sinus issues, cough, itchy skin, rash, headaches, confusion. All of these symptoms could be related to our caused by our homes. Who do you call to help figure it out. What assurances do you have that the problem will be solved? None really, if you take our advice the home will be improved, this I can assure you.

Problem Solving Matrix

  1. Get a historical perspective.
  2. Understand he symptoms
  3. Home inspection using a systems approach.
  4. Test for things that could be related
  5. Interpret the results
  6. Make recommendations
  7. Take action to remedy the findings
  8. Followup

What Can We Test For?

I confess, I love tools, fortunately there are a series of tools that can fit into my portable inspection

kit. We can test for Radon, Mold, Formaldehyde, Particulates in the air, Air quality in general, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Dioxide, Connection between crawl and home, Connection between attic and home. How tight the home is, Missing insulation, Duct disconnection, Combustible gasses, Water quality, Water hardness, Temperature, Humidity, Insidious water leaks, Lead based paint, Rodent activity, Structural issues.

What Other Resources Do You Have?

Beyond our realm, is industrial hygienists, and scientists that do this work and have degrees in the science of what could make a home unhealthful. In my experience we can typically find the problems fairly easily, there are cases however, when the pros from Dover need to be called in. Even then, we are all limited by what the client is willing to do to solve the problems.

In the end, we all want the same thing, a healthful home to live in.
