I Am The Parent Of A Leaded Child

by | Sep 2, 2024 | Advice, Healthy Homes | 0 comments

Nothing is more devastating than knowing that you have not protected your child from danger. I have heard enough stories and met the moms, and I know there are plenty more out there. I get angry now, knowing that all of these stories are heart-wrenching. Some deal with it by yelling and devoting their lives to prevention. Others seclude themselves from the public eye, imagining they are somehow damaged. Regardless, they drive me to want to do more.

The realm I am most comfortable in is residential remodeling; I make homes more liveable for clients who live in older homes. I have the potential to poison children and pets through the work that I do. I am also protective of children and do not want any harm to come to them. That is why I take this stuff seriously. Sweeping it under the rug is not how I roll. As a residential remodeler, the bar is relatively high when it comes to the expectation that I will do my job correctly and reduce or eliminate the threat.

A Tool Got Taken From My Toolbox

Contractors only want to deal with leadded components in a house in a lead-safe way. We now have to send samples to a lab or assume all painted surfaces in a pre-’78 home are leadded. That is what happened to Home Depot. The EPA nailed them. They must charge everyone until they find a product to test for lead. They have priced themselves out of the market.

The EPA Is Using Hopium

The EPA hopes that all the contractors will assume that all pre-1978 homes are lead-contaminated and deal with them in a lead-safe way. They are dead wrong! All their hard work and education is going down the drain. They have lost touch with reality. Hopium is a drug of choice for those who have no control over their world. The truth is that they become irrelevant without substituting the 3M lead test swabs.

Rules, Rules, Rules

The EPA needs a dose of reality regarding the RRP program. The institution lives by rules, which hinder it in unexpected, troubled times. Leaders change the rules to adapt, but nobody has the balls to adapt, so the institution becomes irrelevant. Contractors will find a loophole, and who will lose? Everyone. Nobody in the contractor world is screaming about losing the 3M swabs because they have found a workaround.

It reminds me of the story of the flood, in which the news warned him of an impending flood; he decided to wait it out, having faith in the lord. Then the police came to evacuate the fellow while it was raining heavily. He refused, insisting that the lord would protect him. The water rises to the point that he is on his roof. A helicopter responds to rescue him, and he refuses again, insisting that the lord will look after him. He dies and is at the pearly gates speaking with the lord, who he feels let him down. The Lord responds by telling him he tried; he sent warnings on the news, a police officer, and a helicopter.

I’m Right Here!

If the institution had an ounce of common sense, they would be kissing my ass in Macy’s window at high noon when all the people are walking by (A saying my dad used to use). What the hell are they waiting for? Who is going to be the one who tells them that they need to listen to me? I am contacting some mighty, influential people who could do it. Sadly, it has to come to this.

To All Of You Parents With Leadded Children

I am as tenacious as a mama bear protecting their cubs. No, I will not be foiled by an unresponsive agency. I will not be dissuaded from fighting for what I know is right. I will continue to check the front door, but I will also check the back door and sneak in a window if necessary. This Lumetallix instant lead test kit is the cure for the problem. It needs to become mainstream ASAP.
